British Livestock on show to the world at EuroTier

EuroTier, the largest specialist livestock show in the world, attracted 156,566 livestock professionals including 29,591 international visitors from more than 100 countries.

A strong presence of 22 exhibitors from the British livestock breeding and equipment sectors came together to exhibit the excellence of their products to this global audience. The biennial event in Hanover provided a platform to illustrate the top quality sheep breeds present in the UK to producers worldwide. The massive 240,000 sqm of exhibition space attracted 2,360 stands of which 1,147 were international companies from 48 countries.

Breeders interested in top quality terminal sires for meat crosses were provided with plenty of choice from the Charollais, Suffolk, Texel and Hampshire breeds. Charollais were making their first appearance at the show and the quality of the British developed stock aroused considerable interest.

Bluefaced Leicesters were also represented for the first time, demonstrating long wool breeds used in intermediate crosses with local stock. The Lleyn breed made a repeat presence at the show; this increasingly popular breed has been used extensively in the UK recently due to its high productivity, resistance and thriftiness. The dam is seen to be adaptable to a large variety of farming systems.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, export manager for EBLEX said: “Eurotier is a major event for the world’s livestock sector, where the UK’s strengths in sheep breeding must be represented. We not only have the tradition of sheep breeding but also now provide the performance of modern genetics. As meat breeds these are designed to produce tender, flavoursome and succulent lamb for dinner tables across the globe.”

Henry Lewis of British Livestock Genetics Consortium, who with Hampshire sheep breeder and specialist exporter Mike Adams helped organise the stand said: “We had a strong team of breeds and breeders working closely together and we were delighted at the level of business enquiries we got from the EU and many other countries. We hope that the authorities in some of these other countries will do their bit to instigate import certification and, in turn, help their sheep industries benefit from the strength of Britain’s.” He added “Our thanks go to UKTI and EBLEX for their support.”

Dedicated cattle AI company UK Sire Services were part of the British Livestock stand and reported ‘a good show.’ Other British cattle breeding companies, Cogent and ABS-Genus, had stands elsewhere, as did the British pig breeding sector.

The next EuroTier will take place on 15 to 18 November 2016
