Representatives
from the British cattle breeding sector have just concluded the first
marketing venture in Europe since the export ban on live cattle
was lifted earlier this year. WeideFestival ran from 18 to 20 August,
it is a biennial beef event held near Rothenburg in Bavaria, Germany
[www.weidefestival.de] This year it included the European Angus Congress,
a regular get-together of the breed, moving each year to different venues
in member countries.
Working for the British livestock presence were
Rob Wills, Executive Manager for BLG and Simmental, Belted Galloway
and Longhorn breeders.
The Angus delegation included the Chief Executive Ron McHattie, the
President, Vice-President and another breeder.
Rob reports that it was
a great show with considerable interest in British genetics. Enquiries
for beef breeding cattle, semen and embryos were
received for 10 breeds - Aberdeen-Angus, Belted Galloway, Charolais,
Dexter, Galloway, Hereford, Limousin, Longhorn, Simmental and Welsh Black,
and also for some dairy genetics and sheep, including Border Leicesters.
The event attracted widespread interest and enquiries were received from
11 countries – Austria, Croatia, Czech Rep, Denmark, Germany, Holland,
Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Russia and Switzerland.
An Angus heifer
recently exported from Britain to Germany was exhibited with great
success, to win her class.
Forthcoming events in Europe where the British
cattle sector will be represented include the National Ploughing Match
in Ireland in September,
Polagra-Farm in Poland in October, Indagra in Romania and EuroTier
in Germany in November. For details of these and other events see the
diary on this website.
