A new UK-funded pig breeding venture has been established to develop exciting business opportunities emerging in Asia and China. The international pig breeding company UPB Ltd and Brian Edwards Associates Ltd, run by the former managing director of JSR Healthbred Ltd, have formed a joint venture to expand sales of UK pig genetics in markets with massive potential for growth. The venture, Anglo-Asian Genetic Supply Services with an office in Kuala Lumpur, looks to developing new sales outlets in Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar and China.
UPB managing director Ian Torrie said: “Both UPB and, in particular, Brian Edwards already have experience in the pig industries in a number of these countries. By combining our resources we can provide a powerful sales message based on the quality and production potential of UK pig genetics supported by a comprehensive range of associated consultancy services. “There are exciting opportunities in these countries where producers must find ways of meeting a growing demand from consumers to increase both production and the quality of the product. The genetic programme developed by UPB – backed by proven technical expertise – has the flexibility to respond to the demands of different markets while offering major advances to individual pig producers.”
Brian Edwards, who will manage the venture, has enjoyed more than 35 years in pig production and has wide experience of the Asian market. He said that, worldwide, total pig production efficiency had only reached 40 per cent of its potential. Genetic selection, management, training, improved housing and nutrition all had a part to play in lifting the production base. “By working with UPB we can bring together many essential elements into a practical package that will have much to offer producers in maximizing their output and business efficiency in these developing markets,” he said.
