A decision
which will save the UK meat industry millions of pounds in unecessary
costs and at the
same time help the environment has been hailed as a triumph for common
sense
by the Meat and Livestock Commission.
The announcement by Defra that tallow can continue to
be used to fire rendering plants means those operations will not have
to convert to burning
heavy oil which would have increased both costs and greenhouse gas
emissions and added to the drain on these supplies.
The announcement from Defra was made following work by
MLC along with industry organisations, including the meat trade representatives
and
the farming unions, to ensure tallow
can still be used.
Stephen Rossides, MLC Head of Policy, said: "Good
old common sense has
prevailed to allow tallow burning to continue, rather than forcing renderers
to switch to using alternative fossil fuels with all the extra costs
to the
meat and livestock chain and environmental damage that would follow."
"With ever growing cost and competitive pressures
throughout the chain, this
is good news for our industry."
