This week a consignment of 12 pigs from the British Saddleback, Large
Black, Berkshire, and Kune Kune breeds left London Gatwick airport
for New York. The pigs were sourced from four UK breeders.
These are the first of such pigs to be exported
to USA for some years, and the first ever Kune Kune pigs to leave
UK shores. The Kune Kune is the Maori pig from New Zealand and
favoured above all others as a devoted pet.
It was also a first for Continental Airlines who
have not previously flown export shipments of breeding pigs.
The order was executed by Tim Harris of Harris Associates
Ltd, www.tim-harris.co.uk who is an expert in the sourcing and
logistics for all types of breeding stock.

Ensuring full sanitary and welfare aspects of such orders
requires considerable skills and patience, working with Government authorities,
veterinarians, transport agents, suppliers and clients. Tim has exported
pigs to 40 countries, recent shipments have included Bhutan and Thailand.
Tim has a lifetime experience with pigs and works closely
with the British Pig Association [BPA] www.britishpigs.org and the British
Livestock Genetics Consortium, of which he is a Director. www.britishlivestockgenetics.com This order was instigated whilst representing the British breeding sector
at the World Pork Expo in USA, where he will again be supporting the
BPA in June this year.
