Three very useful publications from the highly regarded Economics team in what was MLC:

A Pocketful of Meat Facts 2009
The 15th edition of this pocket-sized yearbook contains a wealth of annual 2007 and 2008 statistics for beef, sheep, pigs and poultry. Over 50 tables show:
• Supply chains
• Livestock numbers
• Abattoir numbers and throughputs
• Slaughterings, production and average carcase weights
• Trade in meat and live animals
• Consumption and expenditure
• Producer and retail meat prices

ISBN 987-1-904437-42-0

Pig Yearbook 2009
The Pig Yearbook 2009 provides a detailed analysis of the development of the turbulent EU market and more importantly its impact on relative cost competitiveness.
The Pig Yearbook 2009 includes:
• analysis of production costs and returns, indicating that the average net loss for British producers was about £11/pig in 2008. However, this picture was repeated across the EU as producers struggled to cover the inflated cost of production arising from record feed costs.
• update from the knowledge transfer team showing how KT has helped pig producers raise their level of efficiency and led to continued improvement in most industry Key Performance Indicators.
• surveyed financial and technical performance data for various pig production systems from Agrosoft Ltd.
• pig meat supply and demand trends.
• key industry statistics and carcase classification.

ISBN 978-1-904437-39-0
Price: £18 BPEX levy payer, £22 UK Standard, £28 Non-UK

UK Yearbook 2009 - meat and livestock
Produced for EBLEX, the Yearbook is an invaluable reference to the meat industry, providing a comprehensive set of statistical data across all livestock sectors.
The Yearbook contains details of last year's farm enterprise costings in England, as well as an explanation of how the Common Agricultural Policy currently applies to the UK.
The UK Yearbook contains time series for the data presented in A Pocketful of Meat Facts, as well as:
• Regional livestock numbers
• Livestock density maps
• Sources of meat purchases
• UK food and drink expenditure

ISBN 978-1-904437-41-3
Price: £18 EBLEX levy payer, £40 UK Standard, £50 Non-UK

.... and they are on the move ....................

On 27 July 2009 the former MLC Economics team move from Milton Keynes (their base since 1968) to Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, the new home for the new Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). They will become part of a wider AHDB market intelligence directorate covering cereals/oilseeds, dairy, red meat and potatoes.
The red meat market intelligence team will endeavour to provide the same high level of service to which industry is accustomed and for the time being the portfolio of publications and services will remain unchanged.
