Foot & mouth disease in East Asia 2008 Archive |
The doors to a major new international market have been opened with the United
Arab Emirates (UAE) lifting their Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) related restrictions
on the import of lamb from the whole of the United Kingdom. This decision follows a successful visit to Dubai by Martin Williams from Defra’s Global Animal Health Division and Andrew Taylor, Chairman of the British Livestock Genetics Consortium (BLG) but on this occasion working as Veterinary Consultant to Defra. This is a major success for the new Defra-industry partnership, UK Export Certification Partnership (UKECP), which is focused on developing export health certification for the UK’s livestock and livestock product exporting industry to countries throughout the world. Negotiations for a certificate to cover UK beef exports to UAE have also been started and there are plans for more UKECP visits to other key Middle East countries. Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) and Scottish Development International (SDI) supported the work of UKECP in gaining a UK-wide export health certificate for lamb exports to the Emirates, which include the prosperous enclaves of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Laurent Vernet, Head of Marketing for QMS, said: "This is great news for the industry as it opens up a new and rapidly expanding market for Scottish exporters. Dubai in particular has become one of the major transportation hubs of the world, welcoming more than 18 million travellers in 2008, and has a bustling economy which attracts many foreign workers. The population has more than doubled in the past 10 years to 1.6 million people. " Lamb is the most favoured meat throughout the Emirates, and with some of the most iconic and exclusive hotels and restaurants in the world being built in the area, it will be important for them to source the best quality ingredients to use. We're now working hard to ensure that the opportunities opened up for Scotch Lamb are also extended to Scotch Beef." Dubai and the UAE were recently identified by QMS as key markets to target for exports and QMS is now working with SDI to build on this work with the aim of establishing sales channels throughout the nation. David Smith, Operations Director at SDI said: "This is a terrific development for the Scottish red meat industry. The United Arab Emirates provides real growth opportunities for Scottish food exporters. SDI will continue to work with QMS to support the work to now get Scotch Beef as well as Scotch Lamb into this expanding and dynamic market." QMS now has a number of other potential target markets outside Europe in its sights pending successful negotiations on the required export documentation. The Scottish Government continues to back the Scottish red meat industry's export ambitions recognising its vital contribution to the Scottish economy. QMS and the Scottish Government work closely with Scotland Food and Drink, the food and drink industry's leadership body, as it spearheads the creation of a Scottish food and drink industry worth £10 billion pounds by 2017. The news is also welcomed by the English Beef & Lamb Executive (EBLEX). Jean-Pierre Garnier, Export Manager for EBLEX, comments: "This marks a major step forward for UK animal and animal product exports to the UAE, and we can now start to apply for certification allowing us to begin trading. EBLEX hopes that this could be the first in a series of FMD related export restrictions to be lifted, which would have incredible implications for our export markets." He noted that EBLEX's successful presence at the Dubai 'Gulfood' exhibition in February has begun to pave the way for a number of business opportunities with potential buyers. The removal of these restrictions has wide reaching implications for quality lamb exports to the Middle East, opening up a previously untapped market for various products, including Halal lamb, mutton and offal.
