In a first for Alpacas, the UK and Qatar, eight alpacas were delivered to Al
Wabra Wildlife Perservation on December 16 2008, believed to be the first alpacas
delivered to the Middle East and certainly the first from the UK.

Some of the alpacas happily settled into their new home.
The exporting breeder was Dr. Paul Rylott of Melford Green Alpacas based in
Suffolk, Eastern England, comprising 120 head. For more about them see www.melfordgreenalpacas.co.uk
Co-ordination of the export and shipping arrangements were undertaken by Stanford
Livestock International Ltd. who have been involved in the global alpaca trade
for 15 years. SLI Director Richard Beale said that this export was a six-month
exercise with over a dozen organisations playing their part. He is also a Director
of British Livestock Genetics Consortium Ltd (BLG).
The export certification negotiations were brought together by Andrew Taylor
BA VetMB MRCVS, Chairman of BLG, acting on behalf of Britain’s livestock
breeding industry. He said “BLG is delighted to have the British Alpaca
Society as members of BLG, that BLG could play a pivotal role in the health
certificate arrangements and that the breed is thriving in Britain. Previously
British alpacas have been exported to other EU member states but to have pioneered
this new export market is a great achievement. It’s what we in BLG and
our members do.”
