Foot & mouth disease in East Asia 2008 Archive |
The listing below indicates where there was agreed certification for breeding stock and germplasm imports from Britain prior to August 2007 (ie before the FMD virus leak from the UK Government's site at Pirbright).
UK exports to the 26 European Union countries re-commenced in late 2007; some other countries follow these protocols, eg Norway, Switzerland. Many other countries have already either reinstated their certificates in line with domestic, EU and OIE protocols or new agreements have been reached with others - all these are indicated in bold print below. BTV safeguard clauses have yet to be agreed/added to certificates for some countries. Agreed certification on sanitary issues is required between countries before normal trade in animal products (genetics and meat) can take place. Within the European Union trade takes place for all products under harmonised conditions. Outside the EU the world animal health body, OIE, has protocols for trade in these products (see www.oie.int); by 31 December 2007 the UK had re-qualified for FMD-free status and OIE recognised this on 19 February 2008. The terms in most of the agreed certificates are now met. Animal breeding is very dynamic and the most advanced countries are those that are most receptive to international opportunities. Updates on certification can be obtained from DEFRA's website,http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/animaltrade/noneu/index.htm. There is also a permanent link to it from BLG's website. BLG works closely with DEFRA through the Export Certification User Group (ECUG) to progress export certification. Copies of many specimen certificates can be downloaded from the DEFRA website http://www.defra.gov.uk/foodfarm/animaltrade/noneu/ehc-specimens.htm
