The OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) confirmed that as of 19 February 2008 the UK is once again a foot and mouth disease-free country where vaccination is not practiced, in accordance with Chapter 2.2.10 of the OIE's Terrestrial Animal Health Code. This is published on the OIE website at:

A Defra Information Bulletin is published on Defra's website at www.defra.gov.uk/news/2008/index.htm
This now means that health clauses in British veterinary export health certificates stating that the United Kingdom (or Great Britain) is free of foot and mouth disease in accordance with the OIE criteria can be signed. Such certificates will be made available to UK exporters as soon as possible, based on demand.
Henry Lewis, Chairman of the BLG said: "This is great news for our breeding sector and the important role that exports play in their hard-pressed businesses, also for our patient clients around the world who want and have been waiting for British genetics since the virus leak from the Government's Pirbright FMD site last year."
However, some counterparts in governments around the world introduced their own foot and mouth disease-related bans or restrictions on imports from the UK which inhibits the use of their certificates that were in play up to August 2007. So, exports of foot and mouth disease-susceptible animals and their products will remain restricted until such time that they follow the OIE position, to which they all subscribe.
