Less than eight years after opening a semen store with a capacity of over 1 million doses of semen, UK Sire Services have opened a new store that is over three times the size of the original. The store is at Bovey Tracey in Devon, close to the A38 trunk-road.

“We are delighted and considerably relieved to have moved!” said Geoff Corke, Director of UK Sire Services “We have planned and converted a modern warehouse, adhering to the latest exacting EU regulations overseen by Defra. It is, in fact, probably the best EU Licensed Semen Store in Europe that has been custom built to these protocols.”

Geoff, who has responsibilities for the store, storage and shipping at UK Sire Services is very well versed in all matters pertaining to distribution having been for many years Export Manager for the British Livestock Company. “We had been looking for the ideal site for over a year and we cannot have been more pleased to have found such a superb location” said Mr Corke.

Tim Brook, the experienced Store Manager, will enjoy the facilities now that he has far more space. “Business is booming on both export and domestic shipping fronts” said Tim, “Not only are we storing and handling semen that we have collected on farm (for domestic use only) or on one of our two studs (to export standards) but because we are completely independent, we are now handling more and more semen on behalf of British breeding and retail companies: receiving, storing and distributing.”

Rob Wills, fellow Director of UKSS with Geoff Corke, heads the team that are leading the British charge into the semen export market and he has more than a few reasons to be glad that the move has taken place and the store is up and running. “We are proud of the proactive nature of our business in the overseas market and of the new trading benefits that we have been able to bring to bull owners throughout the UK” he said. “In particular, we have concentrated on breeds that have been overlooked by other companies, namely coloured dairy breeds, British Friesians and many of the beef breeds. However, with this burgeoning export market that we have developed we need to be constantly in touch with breeders to remind them of the importance of looking for ways of added income off the farm as “new money”.

Steve Oultram, a top Ayrshire breeder from Flint in North Wales, also a Director of UK Sire Services, has invested in the property at UKSS and is pleased with the outcome. “With my responsibilities at Cattle Services Ayr (CSA) I need to be sure that the service that we get in collecting and storing semen is second to none”, said Steve, “But the icing on the cake at UK Sires is the massive push in the export market that they make ensuring the very best possible results for each bull owner with genetics that suits a market. For the first time last year, CSA exported more semen than was used domestically and we can see further exciting potential over the next few years. The independence of UKSS allows them the opportunity to give a completely unbiased view of each bull that they handle and their advice and experience in the export field in invaluable”.
