A second major consignment of Hereford cattle have been exported recently to France.
On behalf of the French buyers, Stanford Livestock International organised
the shipment which included 16 cattle purchased by Geoffroy D’Herbecourt,
Saint Molf, Anjou. They comprised six bulling heifers and a bull from the Boundless
Herd belonging to Messrs Myers of Godalming, Surrey; six heifers from the Hillrow
Herd owned by A.G. Wright & Son (Farms) Ltd., Ely, Cambridge and a further
three in-calf heifers from the Reydon Herd belonging to John Little Farmers,
Chelmsford, Essex.
Other cattle in the shipment were for Pascal Bastien, Bagneux in the East of
France who also bought from Messrs. Myers, a 22 month old bull, Boundless 1
Edge. Making a return trip to the Britain was Jean-Christophe Bétis,
St Ceneri le Cerei, Normandy who purchased a two year old bull, Fisher 1 Earl,
and two in-calf heifers, all three bred by W.J. Hutchings & Sons, Chichester,
W. Sussex.
Two of the bulls included in the shipment are destined to go on the English
Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) stand at the SIA Show in Paris, 27th February
to 7th March 2010.
Remi Fourrier and his team from AHDB Meat Services/EBLEX in France played a
major role in coordinating the arrangements for the purchases and documentation;
they have been a major supporters of British cattle and sheep genetics.
At this year’s prestigious SIA exhibition, EBLEX, working with the French
Hereford Association, featured the bull Lowesmoor 1 Colombus for the second
time at the event, visited by some 700,000 people. Articles in the specialised
press raised the interest for the breed in Brittany where Colombus is based.
The French Hereford Association is also now working closely with Institut de
l’Elevage (the State breeding organisation) to demonstrate the relevance
of the Hereford breed in French cattle production systems. The Association has
managed to get the support of major meat companies such as Charal which is part
of the Bigard group and SVA, integrated beef supplier to Intermarché
to develop the awareness of the breed at production level but also further down
the beef chain.
Later in 2010 the French Hereford Association is hoping to show some Hereford
cattle at Sommet de l’Elevage in Cournon in Central France in October,
one of the major beef cattle shows in France.
Hereford Vintage Beef (the brand was developed and registered by EBLEX) continues
to flourish with Metro Cash & Carry and was on special promotion, from 24
September to 7 October this year, a third of a page of their in store magazine
was dedicated to Hereford Vintage Beef. Metro is the largest supplier of meat
to French commercial restaurants.
