Dimapur: Two senior consultants of the United Kingdom accompanied
by an official of the British High Commission's (BHC) Commercial Division
arrived in Dimapur on Friday on a two-day visit to Nagaland. Tim Harris
from leading British consultancy, Harris Associates, a member of The British
Livestock Genetics Consortium and Dr. Pinder Gill, Technical Manager of
Britain's Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC), accompanied by Ms. P. Indu
from the BHC's Commercial Division arrived in the State on Friday. According
to reports, the specialists would primarily advise the State and its farmers
on piggery farming and livestock industry (cattle, sheep and pigs) as
well as meat processing technology to improve its efficiency and develop
domestic and export market for the same.
It may be mentioned piggery farming on a village co-operative
basis has great potential for improving the economy of individuals in
the villages. Besides, it will also save crore of rupees spent for import
of pork from places as far as Rajasthan. During their stay, the consultants
will visit a piggery firm in Medziphema where they will interact and advise
local farmers on piggery and meat processing technologies as well as on
introducing improved technology followed by their visit to Kohima where
they will interact with Minister for Veterinary & Animal Husbandry,
Thenucho and other senior government officials. It may be mentioned the
MLC works with the British meat and livestock industry to improve its
efficiency and competitive position besides maintaining and stimulating
markets for British meat at home and abroad, while taking into account
