Britain is proud to offer new and established blood lines,
genetic diversity and consistent, quality livestock and genetics to the
world. BLG's members
look forward to an increasing number of countries agreeing import protocols,
as their governments agree certification. In Africa there is certification
for various products to go to Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda,
South Africa and Tanzania. The latest position is always listed on this
website under “Certification Updates” - please contact us
at www.britishlivestockgenetics.com with any enquiries.
Recently Rwanda
has shown other countries in Africa the way by agreeing cattle import
certification from Britain along internationally accepted
health protocols. This is good news for the charity Send a Cow, which
enables poor farmers in Africa to become self-sufficient by providing
them with quality livestock (not just cattle!), training and advice.
They work with the most vulnerable groups including children orphaned
by war, families affected by AIDS and disabled people.
In Rwanda Send
a Cow is working with the government to help improve genetics and introduce
breeding programmes, making up for periods of
neglect and deterioration of production. Increased availability of
good quality livestock will help to speed up this process and see even
more
poor African farmers benefit. To support Send a Cow or to find out
more, see www.sendacow.org.uk
Another British charity, namely Farm Africa,
is also doing good work in Africa (www.farmafrica.org.uk)
For example, through Farm Africa, British
bred Toggenburg goats are helping to relieve poverty and malnutrition
in Kenya.
