A visit by
a group of French Hereford cattle breeders and producers, led by Mr.
Remi Fourrier, (Manager for MLC in France) in early December
2006 has resulted in the sale of nine Hereford bulls to refresh and bolster
the genetics of the breed in France. They arrived safely earlier this
month, to be shared between four buyers.
The consignment consisted of
two bulls from Welsh breeders, Messrs Jones of Dendor Herefords, who
herd took the National Show Herd of the Year
award in 2006 following a very successful season. Four other breeders
supplied stock, Andrew Hobson of Eldersfield Herefords (two bulls), Michael
Clark of Lowesmoor Herefords and B,H & MR Myers of Boundless Herefords
(three bulls), whose cattle were all polled. Ralph Bailey of South Herefordshire
supplied the only horned bull in the consignment, he was by the 2006
Hereford Sire of the Year, Border General V85. The logistics of arranging
the health checks and transport from the spread-out herds was managed
by BLG member Stanford Livestock International.
The Breed Secretary, David
Prothero, commenting on the shipment expressed his delight that this,
one of the first shipments to go overseas following
the lifting of the export ban, was to go to France, being the last
country Herefords were shipped to prior to the imposition of the ban
some 17
years ago. And Mr Fourrier's role is also fundamental to the story.
In a previous role he was a key figure in the original importation of
Herefords
to France and subsequently has done much to look after the breeders
there. For contacts or more info see www.herefordcattle.org and www.mlcfrance.com
