Genus plc, the British world leading cattle genetics company has announced that it has reached agreement t buy Sygen International plc, a world leader in pig and shrimp genetics. Both companies are quoted on the London Stock Exchange, which in itself must be a little unusual for an animal breeding company to have a stock exchange listing, an indication of their size. Sygen is the parent company of PIC International [formerly the Pig Improvement Company]. Genus is a member of BLG.

The Genus Directors believe this creation of an even larger genetics company will provide scope for applications to more species, economies of scale and better geographical coverage. It will also allow research and development programmes to be combined and, in turn, lead to increased efficiencies and profitability.
