England is
steeped in history and for many years was known as the “Stockyard
of the World”! The year of 2006 brings those two statements together
in celebrating 100 years of the famous Devon cattle in Brazil.
The Brazilian
Devon Society organised a grand tour of Devon herds in May and now
as a culmination of the Century Celebrations they have extended
the honour of inviting a top breeder from the UK, Lisa Roper, to judge
their Expointer show at Esteio, Porto Alegre this month [August]. It
promises to be an event that will live in memories for years to come
with many Devons entered for the show.
Lisa Roper established the world
famous Forde Abbey herd at her home in the west of England in 1981.
And what a home! The cattle graze the
verdant pastures surrounding the 12th Century former Cistercian Monastery
which now also welcomes the public to see the wonderful house and gardens
in a quiet and beautiful corner of England. [For more about the herd
and abbey, see www.fordeabbey.co.uk and www.redrubydevon.co.uk about
the breed.]
A team of British cattle breeders and industry leaders,
lead by Rob Wills, Executive Manager of BLG, will again be at Expointer.
As usual,
they will have a stand in the International Pavilion in partnership
with the British Consulate. They look forward to welcoming anyone with
a question
about British livestock, especially as the doors are now open for trade
in semen and embryos.
Rob Wills said recently that “I am delighted to be coming to Expointer
again this year and thrilled to be able to watch Lisa Roper judge the
Devon classes. It is a great honour, not only for Lisa, but also for
the Devon Society in England and all British cattle breeders”.
Semen from one of Lisa’s top bulls, Forde Abbey Aesop is available
in Brazil from Semeia. Other cattle breeding companies in Brazil that
market British genetics include Araucaria, Lagoa da Serra, ABS Pecplan
