The Danish Pig Breeders Export Association, DanBred International [DBI]
increased exports of breeding pigs by 15% to 37 500 head in 2004/05.
Trading losses in 2003/04 were turned to DKr6.8m
[£654k] profits
in 2004/05 from a financial turnover of DKr90.4m [£8.7m], an increase
of 17% over 2003/04.
This is the best result from DBI in many years,
reports LandbrugsAvisen, as DBI now looks to extending its markets
further - Russia is a key target.
Thomas Henriksen of DBI said "Russia is especially interested in
Danish breeding material as their government wants to increase growth
in the agricultural sector."
Present main markets are Germany, Belgium and Italy, which in total
represent 83% of all exports. DBI reported that Danish pig genetics went
to 22 international markets, and included Korea, Serbia and Venezuela.
DBI say that their biggest competitor is the British
company PIC, which has been established in Denmark [and globally] for
many years. Their
other significant competitors are JSR
Genetics [also British] and the
Dutch company Toppigs. Henriksen added that local pig breeding associations
worldwide also offered a certain degree of competition. "Not everybody
accepts Danish breeding pigs as the world's best, prices can deter potential
customers, especially on more distant markets, where transportation costs
push the total prices significantly upwards," he said, adding that
markets closer to Denmark were most attractive.
