The English cattle herd has remained remarkably stable over the past two years but the latest evaluations of British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) birth registration data highlight various changes in the structure of the national herd for the beef industry.

At 1.87 million, the number of cattle registered with BCMS in England in 2004 was almost identical to 2002 – albeit slightly back on 2003 – representing around two thirds of total GB registrations. However, the figures hide a decline of over 6% in dairy-bred registrations almost exactly offset by a 3% increase in animals sired by beef bulls. Over the two years, therefore, the proportion of dairy-sired animals joining the English herd has fallen from 35.5% to 33.4%.

Although not yet evident in national slaughtering data, this clearly suggests the industry is responding to changing opportunities in the English beef market, all the more so when seen alongside insemination information which indicates an increase in the numbers of dairy cows being bred to beef bulls.
