The first exports to Mexico for some years of British Charolais and Limousin semen have been shipped recently, with contributions from seven notable Charolais bulls: Alwent Vougeot, Cockerington Urchin (polled), Balmyle Victor, Edenhurst Shogun, Maerdy Tally, Shraden Tallisman and Thrunton Unstoppable and the Limousin Ronick Member.

The consolidated shipment was brokered by British Livestock Genetics on behalf of its members, while Genus worked in close association with UK Sire Services to facilitate the shipment. Genus’ ABS subsidiary in Mexico [ www.absmexico.com.mx ] is taking some of the semen whilst the major share is destined for the Mexican Charolais Society.

" After three years of market development helped by the British Consulate in Guadalajara and Charolais and Limousin breeders, a team, including the Mexican Charolais Society’s president, Ing Francisco Elizondo came to the British Charolais Cattle Society’s official spring show and sale in Perth, Scotland in February where they chose a group of six bulls from six different breeders” explained BLG’s Rob Wills

Dr Elizondo commented: “We have over the years introduced various bloodlines from France, Canada and the USA, however with opening markets we wanted to break the mould and take a fresh look at British Charolais - we’ve now found the type of cattle we are seeking. They have length, ease of calving, milk, good locomotion and tight sheaths, all of which are essential for our extensive systems. What’s more, British Charolais evaluations are similar to those in the Mexican Charolais sire summary and easy to relate to.”

He added: “Native bos indicus [zebu] cattle have had dominance in the Mexican beef sector until the millennium when Charolais overtook their position in both pure and commercial herds simply because the breed is preferred for its adaptability, its heat tolerance and efficiency in terms of growth rates and yield of meat.” Charolais now makes up 30% of all European breed cattle registrations in Mexico, with 13,000 head registered in the herd book in 2005.

British Charolais Society Chief Executive David Benson added: "We are pleased to commence trading British Charolais genetics with Mexico. We firmly believe that this is just the first of many further orders; we offer a first class after sales service and we look forward to ongoing contacts both in Britain and Mexico.” The society’s website is www.charolais.co.uk

The Limousin semen from Ronick Member is destined for a stud herd. He is a powerful bull, who is producing docile offspring, his semen qualifies for export to many markets. His proud owners are JM & SP Cooper of the Tomschoice herd in Yorkshire – for more see www.limousins.com and www.limousin.co.uk

BLG activities for the livestock sector have been supported by UKTI, IATC, EBLEX and QMS
